Generative AI Neural networks are the heart of the increasingly popular type of AI known as generative artificial intelligence , or gen AI for short. Both traditional AI and gen AI systems rely on data and can be used to automate decision-making tasks. Microsoft's AI virtual assistant Copilot — which went live in November — is perhaps the most prominent generative AI feature among our portfolio companies. Bias Bias is another downside to AI systems — and LLMs in particular — that users need to consider. While GPUs have the upper hand in AI training, CPUs are understood to perform AI inference well.

It led to a shortage of Nvidia's chips as companies raced to incorporate similar generative AI technologies into their products. Amazon's own Trainium2 chips are built for training AI models, including the sort that AI chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT and its competitors run on. More than 50,000 AWS customers are already using Graviton chips, Amazon said. Finally, as part of its deepening relationship with Nvidia, AWS said it will operate more than 16,000 Nvidia GH200 Grace Hopper Superchips, which contain Nvidia GPUs and Nvidia's Arm-based general-purpose processors. AWS didn't announce release dates for virtual-machine instances with Nvidia H200 chips, nor instances relying on its Trainium2 silicon.

Jensen Huang, president of Nvidia, holding the Grace hopper superchip CPU used for generative AI at the Supermicro keynote presentation during Computex 2023. When Nvidia reports fiscal third-quarter results Tuesday, analysts are expecting to see revenue growth of over 170%. Heading into the Thanksgiving holiday, Wall Street will be closely scrutinizing the company that's been at the heart of this year's artificial intelligence boom. In particular, the emergence of AMD in the generative AI market presents a new dynamic for Nvidia, which has mostly had the AI graphics processing unit (GPU) market to itself. "NVDA needs to forcefully counter the narrative its products are too expensive for generative AI inference," the Bank of America analysts wrote.

Jensen Huang, president of Nvidia, holding the Grace hopper superchip CPU used for generative AI at the Supermicro keynote presentation during Computex 2023. Nvidia on Monday unveiled the H200, a graphics processing unit designed for training and deploying the kinds of artificial intelligence models that are powering the generative AI boom. The new GPU is an upgrade from the H100, the chip OpenAI used to train its most advanced large language model, GPT-4. The H200, which is expected to ship in the second quarter of 2024, will compete with AMD's MI300X GPU. AMD's chip, similar to the H200, has additional memory over its predecessors, which helps fit big models on the hardware to run inference.

Arm's big break came in 1993, when Apple launched its early handheld Newton device on the Arm610 processor. Arm's big break came in 1993 when Apple released its handheld Newton device on the Arm610 processor. Apple moved to its own Arm-based processors in Mac computers in 2020, breaking away from the Intel x86 processors that had powered them for 15 years. Qualcomm is another major customer making its latest PC processors using Arm, although that relationship is strained. This simplification is also making Arm the choice for non-chip companies like Apple, Amazon, Google and Microsoft designing their own custom silicon.

Photo: Walid Berrazeg/Zuma PressSemiconductors advanced for decades under the principle known as Moore’s Law, a formulation that describes the improvements that underlie the dramatic evolution of digital technology, and in recent years, advanced forms of artificial intelligence such as deep learning. Moore’s Law, an observation, really, was formulated in 1965 by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore , holding that the number of transistors on a chip doubles roughly every year. Transistors once sold for as much as $150 each. In 2019, a typical Intel microprocessor contained five billion of them—each costing $0.0000001.

The U.K. government said Wednesday that it will invest £225 million, or $273 million, into an artificial intelligence supercomputer, highlighting the country's ambition to lead in the technology as it races to catch up to the U.S. and China. The University of Bristol will build the supercomputer, called Isambard-AI after the 19th century British engineer Isambard Brunel. The announcement coincided with the first day of the U.K.'s AI safety summit, which is being held in Bletchley Park. The computer will pack 5,448 GH200 Grace Hopper Superchips, powerful AI chips made by U.S. semiconductor giant Nvidia , which specializes in high-performance computing applications. The U.K. government hopes the two combined supercomputers will achieve breakthroughs in fusion energy, health care and climate modeling.

The company commands a dominant position in the market for chips used in AI model training. But the question that still lingers in our minds is whether that growth can be substantial enough to meet the lofty, multiyear expectations that became baked into Nvidia's stock price in recent months. Based on the Reuters report, the potential boost to revenue wouldn't arrive for more than a year, and it's unclear what Nvidia's market share would look like then. Another reason for tempered enthusiasm: The gross margins on PC CPUs are typically smaller than Nvidia's data-center chips, a market in which the company has pricing power. Bottom line Nvidia's potential foray in PC CPUs is a development that we'll continue to monitor, but it doesn't put to rest longer-term questions around China.

Here are three major reasons why Nvidia stock — which has amore than tripled so far in 2023 — has not finished its climb, justifying our $600-per-share price target. That's because Wall Street's earnings estimates have been revised much higher than Nvidia stock's more-than-3% post-earnings gain. A forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is calculated by dividing a company's stock price by its annual earnings-per-share (EPS). Using Thursday's midday price of roughly $486 per share, Nvidia stock trades at a 46.6 P/E, based on fiscal year 2024 estimates. That makes Nvidia's stock rally largely an earnings-driven story, not an ascent rooted in multiple expansion.
